NYPD Police Officer Dillon Stewart was shot and killed during a vehicle pursuit on November 28, 2005. The trial of Allan Cameron starts today. Cameron, who is charged with Stewart’s murder, is also charged with shooting another of NYPD’s finest on November 19, 2005 during a botched bank robbery.

My prayers, and those of officers all around the world, are for the family of Officer Stewart during this time.

From the New York Post:

September 17, 2007 — The widow of slain cop Dillon Stewart is expected to be among the first on the stand to testify against his alleged killer today, and will recount a heartbreaking phone message she got from her dying husband, police sources said.

The emotional testimony by Leslyn Stewart will set the tone for the explosive trial in Brooklyn, where members of the Finest will pack the courtroom.

The widow is expected to talk about the last phone call she received from her husband as he lay dying in his patrol car, a fellow cop speeding him toward Kings County Hospital in a tragic race against time.

The heroic cop never reached his wife, but in a final, gut-wrenching gesture, left a message telling her he’d been shot and that he was on his way to the hospital, sources familiar with the case told The Post.

Heard in the background, the sources said, are the sounds of sirens and another cop urging Stewart to “hold on.”

Today, nearly two years after the brazen Nov. 28, 2005, shooting, prosecutors will open their case against Stewart’s alleged killer, Allan Cameron.

Cameron, 27, faces life in prison if convicted of shooting Stewart, 35, a father of two, at Church and Flatbush avenues after the officer pulled him over for running a red light. The bullet slipped by Stewart’s bulletproof vest and struck his heart.

[…] When I wrote about this event back in September, I grieved for Mrs. Stewart who would have to endure this trial. I can only hope this helps to bring peace to Stewart’s wife and family. […]
