“The Runaway” Trooper Dies

Honorably retired Massachusetts State Police Staff Sergeant Richard J. Clemens Jr passed away last month.  For those that don’t know the name, you’d likely recognize him as the Trooper in the famous painting “The Runaway.”

The Runaway

“The Runaway” was painted by the legendary American artist Norman Rockwell, and was featured as the cover art on an issue of the Saturday Evening Post.  I don’t know if the young bucks coming up through the ranks recognize the art, but I have a copy of this painting in my own home.

Clemens retired from MSP in 1975 after more than 21 years of service.
