Even a small, relatively insignificant cut while on duty can result in a bad infection. This information was forwarded to me:
Another reason to keep your duty knife and even a small wound clean…
An officer who nicked his finger with his duty knife while removing staples from a target developed a staph infection requiring surgery to remove the infected tissue and six weeks in a finger stretcher.
Clean your knife regularly with an alcohol wipe including the inside of the handle where it rests when closed. Clean even small scratches with an antibacterial towelette or alcohol wipe and treat with antibacterial cream.
Even though this specific incident relates to the officer’s own knife, how bad an infection could you get from cutting your hand on a chain-link fence or from some random piece of sharp metal in a homeless camp?
