In April, 2012 I was at the NRA Annual Meetings & Exhibits in St. Louis, Missouri when Smith & Wesson unveiled the Shield in grand fashion. Not only did Smith & Wesson produce a high quality, compact single stack pistol, they laid all of the ground work for holsters and accessories in advance. Recently Smith & Wesson announced they’ve reached the (1) millionth M&P Shield manufactured.
When the S&W Shield was announced to the market, there was already a large number of major accessory manufacturers on board. Most firearm manufacturers focus on their product, and let the accessory makers catch up after release. With this pistol, a consumer could literally walk out the door of their choice gun shop with everything they needed, including a Shield holster, to start wearing and using their Shield as a concealed carry firearm.
(1) Million S&W Shields
This is truly a remarkable accomplishment and one that Smith & Wesson should be very proud of. The S&W Shield was not the first single stack, compact pistol on the market, but their time to incorporate many of the M&P characteristics that have reinvigorated Smith & Wesson’s pistol offerings was worth the wait.
Though a small version of its larger M&P brothers, the Shield still has a very ergonomic grip, and the pistol is amazingly under one inch in overall width. Benefiting from the enhanced M&P trigger that was tightened up after the initial M&P release, the Shield’s trigger has received many positive reviews. The polymer frame reduces overall weight, while still providing outstanding strength and stability when firing. Having optional white, fiber optic, or tritium night sights, and coming with a 7+1 and 6+1 magazine, the S&W Shield is a strong competitor in the compact pistol market.
DISCLOSURE: I own (2) S&W Shields in 9mm, one for my wife and one for me, and we love them. They shoot well, handle well, and are very accurate. I wouldn’t let my wife carry one if I didn’t think the pistol could perform. Though I typically carry a Glock as my duty and off-duty pistol, I wouldn’t hesitate to select the Shield.
