SCCY Industries is no longer a newcomer, however their accomplishments since beginning in 1998 have been noteworthy. Starting with the CPX-1, and CPX-2 models in 9mm, with all the colors and barrel finishes, SCCY has just announced the introduction of their CPX-3 in .380 caliber. This new pistol may be a bit late to the .380 pocket pistol craze of 4-5 years ago, but there are still plenty of shooters who like to carry and use them.
The entire firearm market was about to explode back in 1998, and Joe Roebuck must have been keenly aware that CCW handguns were going to become one of the fastest growing areas of that red-hot market. Fighting their way among the big names, SCCY has gained the eye of the CCW crowd. By producing well-built, easily concealed “pocket” guns, that are very affordable, SCCY is not only sticking around they are growing as well.
Pre-Production & Final Release
Though SCCY announced the CPX-3 at the National Sporting Goods Wholesalers (NASGW) convention, the pistol is still classified as “Pre-Production”. What that means is that SCCY has prototypes made and being tested, but they haven’t cleared those pistols for full-blown production runs.
Richard was able to attend a factory tour, that included observing the high-tech CNC machinery used in making the various parts of the CPX series pistols, to test firing the new SCCY CPX-3. Richard has posted an initial review of his experiences at our sister site, GunsHolstersandGear.com, and at TheFirearmBlog.com. In addition, he was able to take a prototype CPX-3 home for further testing. Click here to see his review of the new SCCY CPX-3.
The CPX-3, firing .380 caliber ammunition, also has a lighter DAO trigger than its 9mm counterparts. This is accomplished by an improved trigger and a lighter encased recoil spring assembly. That should make some shooters very happy, as a 9.0 lb. trigger pull can be self-defeating in close quarters, rapid fire shooting.
In addition, the CPX-3 will be slightly smaller in dimension (as expected) than the 9mm CPS line, and will come with a completely different slide design. Whether this is to distinguish the CPX-3 from the CPX-1 and CPX-2, or a method of reducing weight has not been addressed yet by SCCY.
From the pictures Richard took it appears that the prototypes are without a manual safety, though that feature will likely be an option. The prototype frame also appears to come without the integrated “RE-COIL CUSHION” that the 9mm versions have. This may be added for final production, or it may not. The .380 is easier to shoot than 9mm and removing a feature that may not be necessary could reduce price even further.
Since the CPX-3 is still “Pre-Production” the actual dimensions have not been released. However, I would expect the CPX-3, in .380 caliber, to be less than an inch in width, a little under 4.0 inches in height, and around 5.5 inches long. Weight would likely drop by an ounce or two. One thing will not be reduced for the CPX-3, and that’s capacity. The CPX-3 will have the same 10+1 capacity as the 9mm versions. That alone could be a huge selling point to .380 aficionados.
In comparison, I’ve provided the specifications of the CPX-1 and CPX-2.
