MantisX Firearms Training System Review

By Aaron 4 Comments

The MantisX Firearms Training System come neatly packaged in a Pelican 1010 micro case.

Mantis is a new firearm accessory company based out of the Chicago suburb of Oswego, Illinois. The Mantis website describes the company as, “gun nuts, with some heavy geek seasoning and a deep passion for our families and our future.” Their first big development has been the new MantisX Firearms Training System.

The MantisX is a really fantastic shooting aid incorporating a mountable sensor and a Wi-Fi app. The MantisX sensor mounts to the shooter’s firearm from several different options. Using proprietary designs, the MantisX Firearms Training System records firearm movements during the shooting sequence for every shot made. This recorded feedback can provide immediate remediation for shooter’s as well as guidance towards the cause of errant shots.

Pike Trail Pocket Blanket Review

By Aaron Leave a Comment

The packaged Pike Trail Pocket Blanket is very compact and lightweight.

Recently, the BlueSheepdog Crew were given the opportunity to test and evaluate the Pike Trail Pocket Blanket. This may not seem like the usual gear and accessory selection for BlueSheepdog, but when I saw the Pocket Blanket I immediately imagined its beneficial use during police, fire, and medical emergency situations in the field. The Pocket Blanket is extremely compact and lightweight, but is designed with modern materials providing excellent heat retention and protection from the elements.

Pike Trail is an outdoor supply company located in Columbia, Missouri. The company was founded by outdoor enthusiasts. The company name comes from a trail forged to an overlook of the Missouri River and connecting to Missouri’s Katy Trail system. The Katy Trail has received national recognition for restoring portions of the old Missouri-Kansas-Texas railroad line into a public park and trail system.

SOG Terminus Arrives for 2017

By Aaron Leave a Comment

The new SOG Terminus could make a really great duty knife.

SOG has become a popular brand for duty and off-duty knives, with perhaps their most popular knife being the SEAL Pup and SEAL Pup Elite knives. For 2017 SOG has issued over a half-dozen new knives, but the one that has caught our eye is the new Terminus. The new SOG Terminus combines excellent craftsmanship with quality materials for a price most can afford.

Though I’ve heard some knife aficionados claim that folding knives are “broken” knives, a good street cop should have a quality folding knife to accomplish many street-level tasks. The new Terminus provides a great quality knife and at a price that won’t break the bank!

Ruger Releases AR-556® MPR

By Aaron Leave a Comment

The Ruger AR-556 MPR is a well-thought and well-built AR-15.

Sturm, Ruger & Co. has just released their new AR-556® MPR (Multi-Purpose Rifle). Capitalizing on the good reviews and success of the original Ruger AR-556®, the MPR version is tailored designed for regular or professional shooters who prefer much more versatility than the basic shooting platform of the original. The new Ruger AR-556 MPR comes with an impressive addition of modern features and components, but also provides the type of modularity expected of today’s AR-15 rifles.

Ruger was very late to the AR-15 (Modern Sporting Rifle) market, and many professional observers questioned if their initial basic AR-556® would even have a chance in the flooded market. However, Ruger’s quality manufacturing, aggressive marketing campaign, and very competitive pricing, all combined with very positive reviews to lift the Ruger AR-556 into the serious conversation about mass-produced AR-15’s. The Ruger AR-556 has been praised for its accuracy and action, and the MPR looks to advance those successes with a much more adaptable rifle.

Aimpoint Releases the Comp M5

By Aaron Leave a Comment

Aimpoint’s newest Comp M5 red dot optic is the lightest in the series.

Aimpoint® continues to expand their already impressive line of red dot reflexive optics with the new Comp M5™. Officially released on September 12th, 2017 the company had allowed a few tester optics to slip into the field prior to the official release. Our friends at The Firearm Blog had posted back in May of the potential release of the Comp M5, and that news has now become official.

The new Comp M5 offers several of the features that have enshrined Aimpoint as a world leader in reflexive optics, and expands upon previous models in areas near and dear to any shooter. The new Aimpoint Comp M5 promises to be very competitive in the compact red dot optic market.

Remington’s New Model 870 TAC 14 Shotgun

By Aaron Leave a Comment

The new Remington 870 TAC-14 compact shotgun could be an ideal shotgun for SWAT teams.

Remington has released a new version of the venerable Model 870 shotgun. The TAC-14 version of the Model 870 is specifically designed for close quarters engagements, where space for maneuverability may be limited or compromised. As the name implies, the TAC-14 seems to be purpose-built for law enforcement SWAT or specialized entry teams, however there can be some additional legitimate uses for this compact shotgun as well.

Reducing the length of a long-gun comes with benefits and costs, especially when the stock has been dramatically altered like the TAC-14 pistol grip. As we review the TAC-14 we’ll discuss the positives and negatives of such a short shotgun to provide a solid groundwork for readers to decide if this shotgun has potential or is just another gimmick gun.
