Summer is coming and the revolutionary elements within society are back on the street. These advocates for overthrowing the lawful government of the United States have infiltrated otherwise peaceful and lawful assemblies and are committing acts of violence. It is the role of law enforcement to handle these problems.
The California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) recently published a book offering guidelines for crowd management. The e-book is called Crowd Management, Intervention and Control.
The book lays out guidelines for California law enforcement agencies on dealing with demonstrations and assemblies, from the lawful to the riot.
Even though Crowd Management, Intervention and Control was written specifically for California peace officers, many of the principles apply to law enforcement agencies and officers in other states. It is certainly worth a read if for no other purpose than to compare to your own agency’s plans, or as a starting point in developing your own response protocols.
