Seriously, when IS the last time you pulled “trusty Rusty” from the holster and gave it a good cleaning? Last month? Last year? Ever?
As cops, we walk around in all sorts of dirty environments and in all of the elements. This past week, my SIG has been sprayed with salt water and been subjected to multiple downpours. Where has your pistol gone?
We never want to walk into a gunfight, but it is a part of the job. And if you expect to win that confrontation, your firearm better be in top working condition. Most of us are carrying autoloaders, and keeping them cleaned and oiled is very important if you don’t want to clear a malfunction in a firefight.
All firearms can choke and malfunction if they are not maintained. This includes SIG SAUER pistols along with that wheel gun you carry on your ankle as a back up gun. Seriously, guns are not magic objects that will just work because it has one designer label on it or another.
These are tools made of metal and by the hands of humans. Just like you are not perfect, neither was the guy who built your pistol. And even if both of you were – dirt, grime and dust can foul up the operation of your sidearm. Don’t let that time you find out it isn’t working be the same time you need it to work without fail.
If you can’t recall when you last cleaned your gun, take a few minutes before heading in to the job and clean it. Your life depends on it!
